Fudge and ISIS

When our beloved prime minister Tony Babbott  warned us last week that ISIS, aka the Death Cult, was coming for us all I though he was just babbotting unintelligibly and repetitively as usual but now...

It seems that they have already captured a part of Queensland.  

We sought refuge in a cafe in Childers. It is on the highway just as you enter the town and is not easy to miss unless you are distracted by the Dinosaur across the road. You'll see what I mean when you get here.

As you walk in you may want to grab your child if they are tree climbing addicts. This one is too magical to resist.

Just in case you are not sure what the speciality of the house is....

Fay makes the fudge herself and will offer you a piece of any of the many flavours to try, or in Nina's case, all of them. An hour later the sugar rush hit and I was regretting not bringing a lead and muzzle. (Thanks Kay) :-)

Her mother, Elma Hailstone was up from the Barossa visiting. Apparently "Hailstone" is a very common name in Wiltshire. Who want to be a Millionaire, here I come!

We were advised to visit Woodgate, a charming little town not far away. Not being pressed for time we decided to check it out since it is on the way ( sort of ) to Bundaberg anyway.

At the end of the road just past Woodgate you come to Walkers point. A great place to put a boat in the water. It is a great fishing spot as this local can attest.

So we checked into our Camping ground. I then discovered that camping for the three of us would cost $41 (!!) while a comfortable Cabin is $68. A no brainer I thought so we put off pitching the tent for another night.

Later we tried fishing for the first time this trip but all we caught were a few midgee bites and some nice views. Water often = reflections.

The Camera didn't capture the colour properly. The sun was blood-red. Spectacular actually.

Nina, after the first cast, said there were no fish in this river, gave up and collected sea shells. Well she was right and did find some nice shells, a piece of coral and...

The evening was a bit annoying because the free wi-fi didn't work and my phone had no reception. If you don't want to be contactable, go to Woodgate Beach. That's our excuse for polishing off a bottle of white..and a bottle of red.

And finally this morning on our way to Bundaberg we spotted another ISIS compound. We are doomed, doomed I say. The only ray of hope is the ISIS winery. Maybe they'll learn to chill.

We are now in a park next to the river in Bundaberg tethering. Where there's a will there's a way.

Cape York via Hell

Today started with ignoring the alarm at 4.45am, luckily woken up at 5.15 and left the house at 5.45. It can only get better after that. Nina and Francoise were scheduled to arrive at 6.10 but the plane was delayed so I got to the airport before they arrived....with three suitcases. Should have brought a truck.

Our first stop was at Coolum beach hoping to catch up with an old friend but he was having a worse morning than me. Hospital is not where one goes to have fun.

We pressed on until Noosa and went for a walk along the coast. A good walk is necessary after a long flight to get circulation back into your legs. ( Disclaimer: This is not medical advice and if your walk kills you don't blame me )

On a completely unrelated topic...

Nina slept from Brisbane to Noosa and then from Noosa to our current location, Hervey bay. But during our walk she covered about twice the distance we did, exploring every rock and tree we came across. A hollow tree is of course too good to resist.

This tame Echidna was about a metre away from the path and surrounded by tourists like us taking its picture. Must be a daily occurrence.  

Many surfers made their way to the beaches along this walk despite the considerable effort required. The majority were silver warriors! The surf must be better than anywhere else.

And this would be an inconvenient place to trip.

We also did some shopping to prepare for our camping adventure. Bedding, food and everything else we may possibly need for our sojourn into the wild. We are now "camping" at the Beach Motel which is on the esplanade in Hervey Bay with a spa bath and cable tv. The only downside is the "free" wi-fi has a limit of 100MB. Really??? Nina used that up in no time watching a few music vids on her tablet.

Anyway, from now on we are roughing it :-)

Ryan Louie wins Doubleroo U20 rapid with a perfect 7/7

Our Sunday rapid tournaments are getting stronger and bigger every time. 52 competitors lined up for a slew of prizes including $150 for first. Ryan Louie made easy work of it despite a precarious position against =2nd (3rd on countback) Alexander Au.

Jason Wang came second, losing only to Ryan, finishing on 6/7

Alexander Au also scored 6/7 only losing to Ryan. It could have been different if he had observed the rule of "Checks and Captures"!

Sophie Congreve won the prize for "Best Girl". She was on the top boards all tournament and finished on 4/7 against a strong field. The board she won is signed by Churchie old boy GM David Smerdon. Only six exist so they are a real collectors item.

The other special Smerdon board went to Ayesha Kagram, the youngest girl at only seven. She didn't come just to warm a seat though, finishing with 2.5 points!

Isaac Lupari is getting used to the winners circle by now here he is collecting second.

And third went to six year old Arden Young. If you ever want a chance to beat this young man I suggest you challenge him to a game now! 

Joshua Cox won the unrated section a point clear of his rivals with 5/7! an amazing performance by an unrated player. 

Jack Millar will also have a rating soon judging by his performance.

A relative newcomer, Lucas Taylor, confessed to only taking up chess so he could beat his younger brother. Long live sibling rivalry :-)

The Doubleroo Dream Team!

If you have never run a junior chess tournament you may struggle to appreciate how difficult it is. Max Condon and Tyson Walker made it look deceptively easy. Cathy and Simon  Congreve looked after the Barbecue and Canteen while other parents jumped up to help whenever they saw an extra hand was required. Also Churchie allowing us the use of such a pleasant venue is invaluable.

Jason Wang wins Churchie Chess Carnival

Jason Wang, the Australian U12 champion led throughout to win the Churchie chess carnival in a last round cliffhanger. Jason started the game well until missing a forced checkmate. Instead he went for a completely winning rook ending several pawns up. He lost his nerve and several pawns transposing into a pawn ending which was momentarily winning for Alex who went the wrong way. In the end they both queened and a perpetual check ended the game.

This saw Jason draw level with Henry Slater-Jones on 6/7 but took the title on tiebreak. Following on 5.5/7 was Alex Au and Alexander Desses with Alex taking third on tiebreak.

Henry had a winning ending in his only loss of the tournament against the winner. If he ever works on his endgame he will be lethal!

I'm afraid my report is a bit incomplete here because I didn't carefully record all the supplementary prizes. We had only advertised three but after seeing the much higher than anticipated entries, the Carnival organiser and Churchie Chess Master Mr Max Condon decided to make a whole heap of new prizes. I did not pay sufficient attention to who won what but thought I'd post their pictures anyway.

Isaac is a student in my chess class at Churchie and is probably the most improved student in the last year. He has gone from barely knowing how all the pieces move to a dangerous tournament player.

Sophie Congreve is an elite Somerville house premier team player and has represented Queensland in both the inter-schools  and individual Australian championships. Sophie won 1001 brilliant checkmates by Fred Reinfeld, generously donated by Adrian Scholtes of ABSCO sheds.

Tyson Walker ran the tournament in his usual exemplary manner. No wonder Max Condon, the organiser, is smiling.

The final, decisive round started in a sportsmanlike manner and ended in the same spirit. This was the case amongst all the competitors on this day.

A fine day it was and the entries exceeded our expectations. Our tournament clashed with an event on the Gold Coast and the Cricket World cup final but we still managed to get 46 players. And why not? We had a sausage sizzle and an alternative cricket match to watch :-)

Pegada, Pegida, Engame, Legida, Suegida, Vagina. Confused? I was.

Pegida

It was a bright sunny morning here in Erfurt, the capital of the German state of Thuringia. Almost blinding since the streets were covered with fresh snow definitely not a day to spend indoors. Luckily there are plenty of things to do on a Saturday, amongst them a demo. We had seen a poster the other day and since it wasn't a Pegida rally we thought it might be fun to go. You may have heard of Pegida in the international press lately. They started in Dresden and are concerned about an Islamic invasion of the Fatherland. Since Dresden presently has two Muslims per every thousand inhabitants you may consider their fear a bit Paranoid but their former Fuehrer, Lutz Bachmann,

assures his followers its not. Also he is not a Nazi. Definitely not. Nevertheless he has been replaced as Fuehrer by a lady who is also definitely not a Nazi.

Pegada

Although they sound similar, Pegada are sworn enemies of Pegida. Instead of being against the Islamization of the west, Pegada is against the Americanization of the west. Actually the last "a" in both stands for "Abendland" which does not have a good translation in English. It refers to Christian Europe, so everything west of Rome. The term was made famous by a book written in 1926 by Oswald Spengler, "Der untergang des abendlandes", which bemoaned the loss of European cultural identity. He compared ancient civilizations like the Egyptians and the Romans and their fall through the prism of art, literature, philosophy, politics and economic structure. It is considered one of the great works of German literature.

 Oswald's contemporaries have dumbed down the message somewhat to cater to the intellectual capacity of today's audience.

Do you want to stop world wide terror? Then stop the USA.

We had some trouble finding the demo because it was neither clear where exactly it was nor exactly what it was about. We arrived at the designated meeting place but all we saw was a handful of people with signs that did not correspond with the advertised theme.

These people were protesting the murder of Christians in far away places but nobody seemed very interested. They soon left and we were left wondering if we had the right place or day. As it turned out our demo started somewhere else so we headed to the railway station.

We finally caught up with them after following the sound of music and whistles. It was a diverse crowd, peaceful enough, so we followed them on a tour around the city. The messages were as diverse as the crowd. Some had dove flags, German flags with the middle cut out for some reason and some carried message boards with different themes.

Patriots are Idiots everywhere.

"Falken", I was told, is the youth faction of the SPD, the social democrats. Others carried the Greek flag in support of the Greek left. Another group wanted fracking banned, which I thought it was anyway in Germany, and another lot wanted Germany out of Nato. All seemed fairly left wing peace orientated themes. There were riot police everywhere, sometimes provoked by teens in black clothing, Gothic writing, pimples and firecrackers.

The trouble was a few teens letting a few firecrackers off. Nobody seemed concerned. It takes more than that to worry Germans :-)

After walking around most of inner Erfurt, apparently because the intended path was blocked by a small group of young Nazi's protesting the protest,

 we made it back to the railway station again where some people started giving speeches.

The atmosphere was quite jolly and the music really lifted the mood. I didn't know there was a German anti-war music genre.

I suddenly noticed that there was another group a block away from us protesting Pegada with American and Nato flags. The police stationed themselves between the two groups although it didn't really seem necessary. Not even insults were thrown.

ENDGAME

 On this occasion the word has nothing to do with chess but is rather an abbreviation of "Engagierte Demokraten gegen die Amerikanisierung Europas".

Translated it means, engaged democrats against the Americanization of Europe. I am not sure how they differ from Pegada and I'm not really "engaged" enough to find out. German demo's, at least this one, seem very complicated and one may need a degree to work it all out. Also there were three groups so I consider myself quite lucky not to have accidentally marched with one of the others. I forgot to bring my Swastika armband and would have felt out of place.

Legida

This is the Leipzig version of Pegida ( not Pegada ) and they also protest against foreigners, particularly those of the Islamic persuasion. They also claim not to be Nazi's, definitely not.

This group is based in Suhl, same story and also most definitely, absolutively not Nazi's! If you claim otherwise you will be shot! Schweinhund!

Vagina

You think I'm joking don't you? C'mon admit it! Ha! I'm not, here's the proof...or should I say spoof.

This groups name is an acronym for "Vaterlandslose alkoholiker gegen Islamophobische Arschloecher"
